So here you are: you’ve read the articles
and you know that sitting for long periods is just not good for your health. But if you work in an office and don’t
to the standard desk-and-chair
configuration, where does that leave you?
Large-scale changes, like joining a gym or taking up marathon running, are great if you’re so inspired, but they’re not the only way to make a difference. These small changes in your work day activities are easy ways to get on a healthier path:
Remind yourself to move.
It’s easy to get lost in work for hours at a time, so set an alarm on your computer or phone. That reminder to move a little will give your body a break, and you can even incorporate some quick stretches
Walk and talk
. Need to have a chat with a coworker? Turn it into a walking meeting. You’ll be productive and energized at the same time, and you may find you inspire others to take up healthier habits in the process.
Don’t skip lunch
. Even if you’re tempted to grind through your lunch break, take the opportunity to stop and refresh. Walk to the lunch room, do a quick lap around the building, or just get outside long enough for some breaths of fresh air. Every little bit helps.
