Sitting on a ball requires engaging your core, hip, and leg muscles to maintain balance, and that little bit of contraction works muscles that may otherwise go unused in a standard chair. On the other hand, sitting on a ball loads more weight onto your lumbar (lower) spine; as with any seating arrangment, staying in the same position for too long — even on a ball — will become uncomfortable over time.
